2023 has been a busy year for the payments compliance space — and a busy year for our ϲʿ¼ customers. With our coverage spanning topics such as the European Central Bank's controversial views on crypto, preparing for DORA and payments "D-Day", and the European Banking Authority's Q&As, ϲʿ¼ users have had plenty of insights to read and payments trends to keep up with.

In this blog, we reveal ϲʿ¼'s most read articles from 2023 — exclusive to subscribers only.

2023 Payments Trends: In a Nutshell

When not grappling with the latest sanction regimes, many ϲʿ¼ customers focused on preparing for the UK Financial Conduct Authority's Consumer Duty deadline in spring of 2023, and then spent their summer trawling through the EU's payment services proposals. The UK government and regulators released consultation after consultation, and the EU's plans for a digital euro continued to generate discussion. And, on top of all of that, Sam Bankman-Fried's trial did little to improve the crypto industry's standing with regulators and governments.

Positive highlights included the US and Canada finally making moves on open banking and the EU opting for harmonisation with its first Payment Services Regulation. And who could forget EU co-legislators' big surprise opening of direct access to payment systems for payments and e-money firms in the Instant Payments Regulation?

Discover the top five topics our customers — and your industry peers — stayed updated with in 2023 below:

1) Payments D-Day

In May, we interviewed the Payment Systems Regulator's (PSR) managing director at the launch of the watchdog’s annual plan. In this interview ϲʿ¼ discusses the PSR’s ambitions for payments, including unlocking the power of account-to-account payments, fraud and crypto.

"With crypto more generally, we are in a realm of same risk, same rules. I'm very excited about the underlying technology that is there, as well as the potential for cost savings and better use cases. But [new technologies] should be expecting to be regulated in a similar way to more traditional systems."
